I see two possible permanent fixes:

  1. change 
           eval `gcc -v 2>&1 \
     to
	   eval `${CC-cc} -v 2>&1 \

  2. turn off all of the warnings in the code I ship
     Almost no one pays attention to them.

Is there a preference for either, both, or neither?

Does #1 work?  I think it will, but I don't have a Sun Studio 12
system on which to make the test.
