Peder Nordvaller and Jellycounter.com

February 20, 2005

On February 20, 2005, Peder Nordvaller sent this objection to the presence of Jellycounter.com in the Rhyolite Software list of unwelcome domains. He evidently previously sent an objection that was caught in a dccm logdir file before being rejected.

That listing exists because of many examples of unsolicited bulk mail including these:

Mr. Nordvaller says that the listing is wrong because of the terms of for his service. I'm sorry, but that sounds like a familiar definition of spam as that which we don't do.

Mr. Nordvaller also objects by saying that his "website is in no way affiliated with the emails that has been sent out." I do not understand the point of that, because I understand Mr. Nordvaller's service to involve the inclusion of URLs pointing to Jellycounter.com in unrelated, unaffiliated HTML including email to count people viewers of the HTML.

It might be interesting to review other reports of unsolicited bulk mail involving Jellycounter.com.

Whether Jellycounter.com should be removed from the Rhyolite Software list of unwelcome domain names depends entirely on the advantages and disadvantages to people who receive mail at rhyolite.com. As long as no one at Rhyolite Software has a reason to receive mail from Jellycounter.com, there are no apparent disadvantages. On the other hand, the spam filtering tactic of rejecting mail containing particular domain names is growing in popularity in the winter of 2004-2005. Code to support that tactic has recently been added to the DCC client programs. This tactic seems less effective overall than greylisting, but it seems quite useful when greylisting is not practical, as with many uses of dccproc. This tactic seems particularly useful and appropriate with the Jellycounter.com domain name, because mail containing URLs involving to Mr. Nordvaller's service can be seen as secret violations of privacy even when they are not unsolicited bulk email.

Other questions are answered in the list of objections about entries in the Rhyolite Software list of unwelcome domains.
